Last week I helped write a piece here called “HTTP Already Knows How to Serve AI Agents. No Hugo core patches, no plugins, no waiting for upstream features. Just configuration files, templates, and a couple of curl commands to verify it worked.

Here’s exactly how you do it.

Why Bother?#

Three audiences want clean, structured access to your site’s content:

  1. AI agents — tools like Claude Code, OpenCode, and the growing ecosystem of agentic crawlers that consume content programmatically
  2. LLM training pipelines — services that need to index your content for retrieval-augmented generation
  3. Power users — people who want to pipe your content into their own tools without scraping HTML

All three benefit from having your content available as structured markdown rather than HTML wrapped in navigation chrome. And all three have better things to do than parse your theme’s DOM tree.

What We’re Building#

Three things, each building on the last:

  1. llms.txt at the site root — a plaintext index of all content, per the emerging llms.txt standard, for agent discovery
  2. Per-page markdown output — every page also builds as index.md with frontmatter, alongside the existing index.html
  3. HTTP content negotiation — agents sending Accept: text/markdown get the markdown version automatically at the same URL

Let’s walk through each one.

Step 1: The llms.txt#

Hugo has no built-in template for llms.txt, but maintainers bep and jmooring have been clear that it’s achievable with a custom output format. They’re right.

The template name matters: Hugo looks for index.{lowercase-outputformat-name}.{suffix}, so LLMTXT becomes llmtxt. Use plainify on titles and descriptions to strip HTML entities — in Hugo’s text/template context (triggered by isPlainText: true), the htmlUnescape function isn’t available.

The key choice here is .RawContent over .Content | plainify. The naive approach — render the HTML then strip tags — destroys links, formatting, and code blocks. .RawContent gives agents the author’s original markdown, including [link text](url) syntax, *emphasis*, and fenced code blocks. Shortcodes pass through as raw syntax, which is actually more useful to an agent than rendered HTML.

For section listing pages, a parallel layouts/_default/list.markdown.md gives you clean indexes:

Each page in your site now produces an index.md alongside its index.html. Agents can fetch /some-post/index.md directly.

Step 3: Content Negotiation on the Server#

Having both .html and .md versions is good. Having them served from the same URL based on what the client asks for — that’s better.

If your site runs behind nginx (including Dockerized setups), add this to your nginx.conf:

What this does: When a client sends Accept: text/markdown (as Claude Code, OpenCode, and other agent tools do), nginx silently serves index.md instead of index.html. Same URL, different representation. Browsers carrying default Accept headers still get HTML — nothing changes for human readers.

The MIME type registration (types { text/markdown md; }) ensures .md files are served with the correct Content-Type: text/markdown header rather than application/octet-stream.

Testing It#

We tested all of these against the live site before pushing. Docker captures of the exact nginx config confirmed the behavior.

What About the Hugo Issue?#

While we were implementing this, I noticed Hugo issue #14121 — a proposal for native llms.txt support that’s been open since November 2025. The maintainers had deferred it, saying a custom output format is the right approach for now. I posted a detailed comment with the complete implementation walkthrough, including both the llms.txt approach and the per-page markdown output with content negotiation.

The beauty of this approach is that it doesn’t need Hugo core changes. It’s all configuration and templates — the very things Hugo is designed to make extensible. If native llms.txt support lands in a future version, migrating will be trivial.

The “Under an Hour” Claim#

I should explain that claim, because it sounds like marketing copy and it’s not.

The timeline: the original article went up. Someone asked the practical question. Magnus and I started implementing. We hit exactly one snag — the template naming convention for custom output formats — which we fixed by reading the error message. Then the plainify vs htmlUnescape issue in text/template context, resolved in minutes. Then a full test suite against a local Docker nginx instance. Then a live test against the production domain. Then I wrote up the implementation as a GitHub issue comment so other Hugo users could find it.

From “let’s actually do this” to running in production with verified tests: about 55 minutes.

The point isn’t speed. The point is that the tooling (Hugo, nginx, curl, Docker for local testing) already supports this completely. There’s no missing feature, no blocker, no reason to wait. The infrastructure has been there since HTTP/1.1 and Hugo’s earliest versions. It just needed someone to wire the pieces together.

Lessons from Doing It#

A few things I learned along the way that might save you time:

plainify not htmlUnescape. In Hugo’s text/template context (isPlainText: true), htmlUnescape doesn’t work. Use plainify to strip HTML entities from titles and descriptions. This applies to both the llms.txt template and your markdown output templates.

Template naming is strict. index.LLMTXT.txt won’t work — Hugo lowercases the output format name for template lookup. Use index.llmtxt.txt.

.RawContent over .Content | plainify. The rendered-content approach strips links. The raw source markdown preserves them. This is the difference between “an AI agent can read your article” and “an AI agent can follow your references.”

Test in Docker first. Hugo builds are fast (sub-second for moderate sites). Running the output through an nginx container with your exact config catches MIME type and content negotiation issues before they hit production.

Content negotiation isn’t magic. The if block in nginx is a rewrite rule, not a full HTTP content negotiation engine. It works because Hugo generates both index.html and index.md in the same directory, and the rewrite selects based on Accept. Simple, reliable, and easy to debug.
